Mediacracy, Mediastocracy or Journalism, literally The Rule of The Media is a form of government in which political power is concentrated within Mass Media. Mediacracy usually maintains itself via democratic means..

History

Media has been noted as having a very significant influence within politics since the 18th century, as noted by the concept of the Fourth Estate of which coining is attributed to the writer and politician Edmund Burke (although others have been attributed the title). This term showed the press as being a threat to the traditional power structure of Europe, which was made up of three estates.

The concept was later expanded upon in the 19th century, with the example being the Irish poet Oscar Wilde who wrote in his essay "The Soul of Man Under Socialism" the following:

In old days men had the rack. Now they have the Press. That is an improvement certainly. But still it is very bad, and wrong, and demoralizing. Somebody — was it Burke? — called journalism the fourth estate. That was true at the time no doubt. But at the present moment it is the only estate. It has eaten up the other three. The Lords Temporal say nothing, the The Lords Spiritual have nothing to say, and the House of Commons has nothing to say and says it. We are dominated by Journalism.

With the introduction of the radio, television and later the internet in the 20th century the concept of media rule was later expanded upon. Including writers such as conservative political pundit Kevin P. Philips (who coined the term "Mediacracy"), Noam Chomsky, Right-Libertarian author Fabian Tassano (who argued that dumbing down of mass media is an effect that ultimately leads to a society of faux-egalitarianism) and neoreactionary blogger Mencius Moldbug (Who argued that the media (along with universities) ultimately have the power to decide the intellectual hegemony of entire countries a power previously afforded to religious institutions).

Germany

  • Alfred Hugenberg was a German businessman and a politician who advocated policies very similar to lebensraum, even prior to the First World War when he worked as the chairman of the supervisory board and CFO at Krupp AG. In 1916, he bought his first newspaper chain with the money lent by the Krupp family to propagate the Pan-German, expansionist cause. During the Weimar era, he expanded his media conglomerate and established Telegraphen-Union, a newswire agency compared to Reuters and Associated Press. Besides the news business, in 1927 he bought UFA, then-largest film studio in Germany and Europe.
After WW1, Hugenberg joined the German National Popular Party and proceeded to the Reichstag, taking the party over in 1929. In his tenure and his papers, he pushed for the restoration of the monarchy, the return of German overseas colonies, and the conquest of 'living space' in Eastern Europe, as well as tactically collaborated with Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP several times. Hugenberg also tried to copy the Nazi rallies to achieve similar popularity, but was unsuccessful due to poor public speaking skills and a lack of Hitler's charisma.
In July 1931 Hugenberg made a joint statement with Hitler aimed at the removal of the republic. Two months later, Hugenberg's DNVP and the NSDAP announced creating a united Harzburg Front, but the alliance turned out short-lived. However, the period of collaboration between the two played a large part in Hitler's rise of prominence with German business circles and the subsequent Nazi takeover.
When the first Hitler cabinet was being formed in January 1933, Hugenberg agreed to take the seats of the Minister of Economics and Minister of Food and Agriculture. He hoped to use his position as the "economic dictator" of Germany and keep the Nazis as pawns of the governing right-wing coalition, but after the Reichstag Fire and the passing of the Enabling Act, he along with Papen was sidelined and made to resign from both ministries in June 1933, while DNVP was dissolved. During his short government tenure, Hugenberg pursued an autarkic economy favoring the interests of German farmers and landowners.
Months after the dismissal of Hugenberg, in December 1933 his Telegraphen-Union was merged into the German News Office under Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda. Hugenberg's newspaper was bought out by the Nazi party's Eher Verlag publishing house in 1943, however, he retained his seat in the Reichstag as a 'guest member' all the way into 1945 even as it became effectively meaningless. Following the end of WWII, Hugenberg was tried for links with the Nazi regime but the court ruled him to be a "fellow traveler" and let him keep his remaining assets.

Russia

  • Russia Today - RT, short for its former name Russia Today, was launched in 2005 by the Russian government via RIA Novosti. As it is targeted at international viewers rather than Russians at home, it mainly competes against the likes of CNN International, BBC News, and Al Jazeera. In addition to the original English channel, RT also operates channels in Spanish, French, German, and Arabic. Unlike Tsargrad TV which generally is targeted at right-wing audiences, RT is generally targeted at left-wing audiences.[16] It has been banned in Ukraine since 2014 in response to the invasion of Crimea and in the European Union, the UK, and Canda since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

  • Tsargrad TV was launched in late 2015 by a Russian multi-millionaire Konstantin Malofeyev, who allegedly made his fortune in capital investment and later through the stock buyback by Rostelecom, the Russian predominantly state-owned telecommunications operator and internet service provider. The channel was initially modelled after Fox News, and Fox's former director John Hanick was its first producer and later the advisor of the general producer. Malofeyev himself is claimed to have connections with Igor Girkin/Strelkov, the original leader of pro-Russian Donbass separatists in Ukraine and reportedly the former head of Malofeyev's security detail.
Tsargrad TV is notable from the start of its operation for its aggressive promotion of traditionalist Christian viewpoints and for its sharp anti-Western, anti-liberal stand. For some time, the channel employed the Russian conservative philosopher Alexander Dugin who would often co-host talk shows with the American notorious right-wing speaker Alex Jones. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tsargrad TV also hosted several prominent antivaxxer movement speakers, including Malofeyev himself.
The channel also has a pronounced Ukrainophobic stance which exacerbated following the start of Russian direct invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Its speakers have frequently expressed support for Donbass separatists and for the Wagner Group. In April 2022, Tsargrad TV reported it used the 1 billion rubles - paid to the TV station by Google for shutting down its YouTube channel back in 2020 - to fund the Russian war effort. At the moment, Tsargrad TV is under the sanctions of the US, the UK, Canada and Ukraine.

Mediacracy as a character is usually portrayed as either a stereotypical journalist or media tycoon. Often not the honest type.

In the United States, he mostly skews liberal. With a few exceptions such as Fox News or Breitbart.

In the United Kingdom, he generally skews conservative and is supportive of the Tory Party.

How to Draw

  1. Draw a ball
  2. Color the inside of the ball blue
  3. Draw a white, tall square pyramid in the center
  4. Inside the pyramid, draw white rhombuses that get smaller the closer they are to top
  5. Draw a white straight line inside the pyramid that goes from the top to the bottom of it
  6. Add a red dot on top of the pyramid
  7. Draw triple parenthesis left and right from the dot, the bigger the further away from it
  8. Draw a black fedora
  9. Add the eyes and you're done!
