Chavismo is a economically left-wing to far left, highly authoritarian and culturally variably ideology based on the ideas of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and combining the ideologies of Democratic Socialism, Social Patriotism, Trotskyism, Left-Wing Populism, Socialism of the 21st Century and Bolivarianism. Some of its proponents are progressive, while others are traditionalist. It has been the leading ideology in Venezuela since 1999.

He is the arch enemy of PragerU.

History

The ideology of Chavismo was based on former Venezuelan president and ex-military Hugo Chávez, along with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200, Fifth Republic Movement and the Great Patriotic Pole, in addition to influencing other movements and politicians of left and in Latin America.

  • Hugo Chávez - Chávez became interested in socialism when he was in the military, becoming interested in Che Guevara and having read Marx, Lenin and Mao. In 1977 he founded a left-wing movement in the army, the People's Liberation Army of Venezuela, in which he held Marxist clandestine meetings. In 1982, he founded the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200, in which he further developed his ideology and became interested in Liberation Theology, attempting two coup in 1992, but both failed, resulting in his arrest. After being released in government at Rafael Caldera, he ascended politically, winning the 1998 elections for the Fifth Republic Movement.

As president of Venezuela, he changed the name of the Republica de Venezuela to República Bolivariana de Venezuela, also nationalized Venezuelan companies, an agrarian reform and adopted measures to move Venezuela away from Neoliberalism. Even though he was praised for some measures such as the "Bolivarian Missions", reducing illiteracy and increasing the rights of women and indigenous people, but he was criticized for his authoritarianism, increased inflation, scarcity, poverty and violence, especially in his later years of government after the 2008 global economic crisis, having helped the FARC and anti-Semitism. He also had relations with left-wing presidents in Latin America, including: Evo Morales , Rafael Correa , Fidel Castro , Lula da Silva , Daniel Ortega , Raúl Castro , Dilma Rousseff among others. Chavez was diagnosed with cancer on 2011, and died on 2013, although it's disputed if he died on December 2012 or on March 2013.

Madurismo

Madurismo, also called Chavo-Madurismo, is a political movement that emerged in Venezuela in mid-2013, when Nicolás Maduro, a friend of Chávez who occupied several charges while Chávez was in office, specially Vice-president in 2012, initially gained power internally after Chavez death until winning the 2013 elections 1 month after Chávez died. Madurismo establishes the continuation of Chavismo, however, it is more authoritarian and culturally right, as Maduro opposes the LGBTQ movement and Indigenous rights, despite being mildly feminist. Despite Nicolas Maduro himself denying it and unlike Chavez, Madurismo tends to be much more authoritarian than Chavismo at the time of Hugo Chávez, imposing the Bolivarian National Guard to repress peaceful protests against his government and arresting anti-Chavista opponents, accusing them of planning an alleged coup. Furthermore, Madurismo proposed an economic direction opposite to Chavismo (which went from Socialism to capitalism), which led to a slight split between communists and other far-left figures who supported Maduro in mid-2020.

Madurismo remains firmly in force in Venezuela and mainly by the PSUV, despite the political differences between the anti-Maduro Chavistas and the Popular Revolutionary Alternative, a result of the political and socioeconomic crisis that has been present in the country since Maduro took office as President.

Beliefs

Basic Ideas

The ideas of Chavismo are a legacy to that of Simon Bolivar.

Bolivar, getting his ideas form the French Revolution, wanted liberty, consitution of goverment, and wanted separation of religion from state. He was very Authoritarian, but wanted it to be a transition to Democracy.

The central points of Bolivarianism as extolled by Chávez are the following:

  • Latin American economic and political sovereignty (anti-imperialism)
  • Grassroots political participation of the population via popular votes and referendums (participative democracy)
  • Economic self-sufficiency (in food, consumer durables and so on)
  • Instilling in people a national ethic of patriotic service
  • Equitable distribution of (South America's) vast natural resources
  • Eliminating corruption
