Christian Anarchism
"Why freedom? If we accept that God is love, and that it is human beings who are to respond to this love, the explanation is simple. Love cannot be forced, ordered, or made obligatory. It is necessarily free. If God liberates, it is because he expects and hopes that we will come to know him and love him."
"I acknowledge no master in human form."
Christian Anarchism (ChristAn) claims Anarchism is inherent in Christianity and the Gospels. They are grounded in the belief that there is only one source of authority to which Christians are ultimately answerable: the authority of God as embodied in the teachings of Jesus. They therefore reject the idea that human governments have ultimate authority over human societies. ChristAn denounces the state, believing it is violent, deceitful and, when glorified, idolatrous.
History
Beliefs
Christian anarchism bases its beliefs on the Bible, considering that the only authority to be followed is that of God. The teachings of Jesus are an important focus within his theory, with the Sermon on the Mount being a major influence.
Christian anarchists have a complex relationship with the church and organized religion. Figures such as Tolstoy and Hennacy rejected all churches, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. Nevertheless, Protestantism has been influential within Christian anarchism, with figures such as Peter Chelčický and Jacques Ellul. Also within Catholicism is the Catholic Worker Movement, founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin.
It is quite normal for Christian anarchists to be pacifists based on Jesus' teaching to turn the other cheek and to reject all forms of violence in favor of nonviolent forms of resistance.
