Matriarchal Monarchism
Matriarchal Monarchism or MatMon is an economically and culturally variable, though usually somewhat traditional but always some form of feminist and at least somewhat statist ideology. She supports monarchy but believes that the monarch should always be a queen. This could be due to cultural/spiritual beliefs, or because she believes women are more capable for that position.
History
Wu Zetian (624–705 CE) was the only woman to rule China as emperor, governing during the Tang dynasty and later founding the Zhou dynasty. Rising from a concubine to a position of immense power, she leveraged political acumen and alliances to consolidate her rule. Meritocracy was central to her governance; Wu expanded the imperial examination system to recruit officials based on ability rather than aristocratic lineage, challenging the entrenched nobility and embracing
Anti-Aristocracy. Her promotion of talented individuals, regardless of their backgrounds, epitomized a break with traditional hierarchies.
Wu Zetian's reign also reflected Anti-Confucianism, as Confucian scholars criticized female leadership as unnatural. She countered this by aligning her rule with
Buddhist Theocracy, promoting Buddhism as a state ideology to legitimize her authority. Wu commissioned grand Buddhist works and positioned herself as a bodhisattva, framing her rule as divinely ordained. This strategy also embraced
Taoism, as she blended Taoist cosmology into her propaganda, portraying herself as fulfilling cosmic balance.
Her governance demonstrated Totalitarianism and
Police Statism through a robust surveillance apparatus, purges of rivals, and harsh suppression of dissent. Spies and secret police helped her eliminate threats, ensuring loyalty to the throne. Wu’s policies also reflected
Land Reformism and
Agrarianism; she redistributed land to weaken aristocratic landholders and empower peasants, securing broader popular support and reinforcing the economy’s agrarian foundation.
Wu Zetian was an Absolute Monarch ruling with unchecked authority. She advanced
Anti-Sexism by promoting women in government and expanding opportunities for them in court, challenging patriarchal norms. Her policies also embraced
Expansionism and
Militarism, as her reign saw campaigns to extend Chinese influence in Central Asia and the Korean Peninsula, bolstering her vision of
Universal Monarchism, where China would lead a global order.
Aesthetically, her court embraced Reactionaryism, reviving traditional rituals to project continuity with past dynasties while asserting her legitimacy. Lastly, her governance reflected
Social Authoritarianism, as she emphasized moral discipline and control over society to maintain order, stability, and her position at the apex of power. Wu Zetian’s reign thus intertwined ideological innovation and authoritarian governance, securing her place as one of China’s most transformative rulers.
Beliefs
Matriarchal Monarchists tend to believe that a monarch should act motherly towards their subjects, and therefore is a position best suited for Women. Otherwise, certain cultures may put emphasis on Women in positions of authority, leading people to want a Female monarch.
Succession in Matriarchal Monarchist societies could follow a matrilineal primogeniture, in which the oldest daughter is entitled to the throne or matrilineal ultimogeniture, in which the youngest daughter is entitled to the throne. There are also systems in which the position is passed down between the seniority of each generation, or is rotated between sisters.
Personality and Behaviour
Matriarchal Monarchism will usually act in a way typical of most Queen figures, and may take certain characteristics from Monarchism,
Matriarchism or
Feminism.
