What Ifs

What if the Soviet Union created a Jewish state in modern day Kaliningrad?

In this scenario, what in our timeline became the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian SFSR/Federation instead became a Yiddish Soviet Socialist Republic. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the Yiddish SSR gained independence as the Free State of Yidland.

What if Isratine happened?

In this scenario, Israel and Palestine make peace. Acknowledging the importance of the Holy Land to many faiths, they form the ‘Federal State of Isratine/Israel and Palestine in place of the previous respective governments.

The Isratine Government takes influences from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Lebanon, alongside the Westminster System of Government.

Notable points of the peace agreement/constitution:

  • The Jewish community renounces Zionism, and accepts that Isratine has Arab features.
  • The Arab community renounces Pan-Arabism/Islamism, and accepts that Isratine has Jewish features.
  • Isratine is divided into 16 cantons as devised by the Ertz Ard Federation Plan.
  • Isratine becomes a permanently neutral state in order to ensure reasonable access to the Holy Land for anyone, anywhere. The existing IDF is restructured as the Isratine Defence Force by absorbing Palestinian militias. Peace is achieved between the new state and the Arab League.
  • The Federal Parliament will consist of two chambers- the Senate (with four senators from each Canton) and a House of Representatives (with 1 representative per 100,000 people).
  • The President is head of state and is elected for a term of six years by an electoral college consisting of all members of both chambers of the Federal Parliament, presided over by the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court. The Federal Parliament may remove the President if a two-thirds majority of both chambers declare no-confidence in the President.
  • The Prime Minister is head of government and is appointed/dismissed by the President, although the House of Representatives must maintain confidence in the Prime Minister so they can remain in office.
  • Other members of the Cabinet are jointly appointed/dismissed by both the President and Prime Minister. Half of the Ministers are required to be from the Jewish community, while the other half are required to be from the Arab community.
  • Taking inspiration from neighbouring Lebanon, the President is required to be a member of the Jewish community (as a concession to the desire of a home for the Jewish people), while the Prime Minister is required to be a member of the Arab community.
  • The Supreme Court of Isratine shall consist of justices (of which half will be Jewish and half Arab) jointly appointed by the President and Prime Minister for a term of 10 years. The justices will elect a Chief Justice from among themselves for a term of five years, with the office rotating between a Jew and an Arab. The Senate may remove a Justice if two-thirds of Senators declare no confidence in the respective Justice.
  • The structure of the Federal Government is repeated on the Cantonal level, except with:
    • A Governor in place of the President
    • A Premier in place of the Prime Minister.
    • A Legislative Council in place of the Senate (With 2 Councillors per Municipality instead of 4 Senators per Canton).
    • A Legislative Assembly in place of the House of Representatives (With 1 Assembler per 25,000 people instead of 1 Representative per 100,000 people).
