Extremely authoritarian and violent ideologies which, unlike traditional monarchical despotism, want total control over every aspect of social life. The first modernist totalitarian regime was the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, and it has since influenced various far-right and far-left regimes. Totalitarianism is inherently autocratic, and is typically accompanied by the formation of a personality cult around its "great leader", or the secular cult of the state itself, called statolatry.
